Grazie alle osservazioni del telescopio spaziale Hubble, un team internazionale di astronomi ha scoperto che la Nube di Smith è stata espulsa dal disco della Via Lattea 70 milioni di anni fa e ricadrà in un altro punto del disco fra circa 30 milioni di anni.
